YOUNG SWISS CARDIAC SURGEONS

Purpose

The Young Swiss Cardiac Surgeons (YSCS) were founded in 2011 and aim to establish a nationally uniform, regulated and transparent training and postgraduate education in cardiac surgery, to promote clinical and scientific exchange among residents in training, to advance the compatibility of family and professional life, and to build both national and international cooperation within the specialty.

The YSCS represent the interests of young colleagues and act as a link between the SGHC and trainees.

Finally, the YSCS serve as a national information and advisory platform for residents in cardiac and thoracic vascular surgery.

Statutes of the Young Surgeons

Chair and Contact

Currently, Dr. med. Jules Miazza, Dr. med. Lilly Burger (Ilcheva), and Dr. med. Stefania Barmettler are chairs of the YSCS:

Local Representatives

To achieve the goals of the YSCS, local representatives have been appointed in the major Swiss centers (Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Zurich). They serve as contact persons for local problems or suggestions, which are then discussed at an annual meeting with the chairs of the YSCS.

  • Alliance Cardiac Surgery Zurich: Lilly Burger (Ilcheva)
  • Inselspital Bern: Hannah Widenka & Jules Miazza
  • HUG, Geneva: Jalal Joulou
  • Lucerne Cantonal Hospital: Linus Wildt
  • Hirslanden Aarau: Teresa Podstatzky
  • Herzzentrum Bodensee: pending
  • CHUV, Lausanne: pending
  • Cardiocentro: pending

DOPS Booklets (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills)

The DOPS Booklets (basic and advanced) were uniformly introduced in all major centers in 2014 to serve as a personal operative logbook for trainees. In addition, a minimum annual number of procedures was defined (10 per DOPS), which must be guaranteed by the respective center in order to actively promote training.

The DOPS Booklets are evaluated annually by the local representatives, forwarded to the chairs of the YSCS, and reviewed in collaboration with the SGHC with regard to the minimum number of procedures.

Meetings, Workshops

A General Assembly of the YSCS takes place annually at the SGK, where the training progress of individual centers, the previous activities of the YSCS, and innovations in the training system are discussed. For international exchange among residents, colleagues from England and predominantly from the German “Young Forum” are welcomed to our meetings, where they report on their training experiences.

The Young Swiss Cardiac Surgeons are actively represented as a task force member in the EACTS Residents Club.

In order to enable national exchange among residents in training, a Social Meeting is held annually.

To discuss current problems, ideas, and suggestions from the individual centers, an annual meeting of the local representatives with the chairs takes place.
